Iridium wins financing for $2.9b next-gen satellites

Iridium Communications has secured funding for its $2.9 billion next-gen satellite project.
 
The global mobile sat provider also said it had contracted Thales Alenia Space to deliver 72 satellites in orbit, with the first to launch in early 2015.

Ovi map downloads top 1.4 million in two weeks

Nokia has been inundated with requests for its Ovi Maps application, with 1.4 million downloads since Jan 21, when it made the service available for free.
 
The vendor says it cleared its first million downloads within a week and is averaging one download every 24 seconds.
