ZTE: Creating differentiation through R&D

For a long time, Chinese vendors were known for low prices and low quality of products. ZTE, which is set to become a global leader in this field, has defied this perception, thanks to its focus on R&D.

The company spends about 10% of its revenues on R&D activities. It has 16 R&D centres in China alone. Additionally it has 7 centres across the globe outside China. About 40% of its work force comprise of personnel from the R&D department

“Our focus is on providing competitively priced products without compromising on quality. Our products are the best in the world,” said D. K. Ghosh, chairman and Managing Director of ZTE Telecom India.

Though Indian telecom market is one of the fastest growing high potential market in the world, the reality is that the operators are finding it difficult to deal with high capex/opex and low Average Revenue per user (ARPU).

“ZTE realizes this and has offering for operators to deal with this situation,” said Ghosh. Value Added Services (VAS) is one of the solutions which can help operators in improving their revenues.

“Indian operators are set to launch 3G services within a year. The VAS market will mature once 3G services are launched in India,” said Ding Kun, Director, ZTE India R&D centre. He is also in charge of ZTE’s VAS product line in the Indian market.

The company is a global leader in VAS. Its solutions are deployed in 70 networks worldwide and support about 320 million subscribers.

Its VAS portfolio includes Data & Content solutions, Operating platforms, Voice Solutions and Messaging Solutions. The company terms these offerings as part of its ‘Any Service’ offerings.

In India, the R&D centre catering to development of VAS solutions has 150 highly educated and talented professionals. Indians comprise about 80 percent of the headcount, said Ding Kun.
